Investing in people: The role of health and safety in employee retention

Can health and safety affect employee retention?

Your company does a lot of things well. But have you thought about the ways your health and safety policy might be able to ensure you retain the best of your workers?

Retaining your top performers is difficult. You know this. There’s so much competition out there and it’s a job seeker’s market at the moment. It’s tough for employers to hold onto their best people.

But there are things you can do to ensure you’re providing them with the best environment – something they won’t get anywhere else.

How important is investing in your employees?

Mentoring software firm Chronus has found that 79% of business and HR leaders around the world think they have a significant problem with retention and employee engagement. So it makes sense that you do all you can to keep hold of your top performers.

The Harvard Business Review also points out that “employees want to know they are respected and appreciated”. Meanwhile, president of Cosmique Global Inc Anjali Chugh has highlighted that “making employees feel appreciated, valued, respected and rewarded does a lot to dissuade them from jumping ship”.

What this means is that your company should be doing everything in its power to ensure your workers never feel like they’re not highly valued.

Train your employees

One of the most important things you can do to ensure your colleagues feel valued is to invest in their training and development. And this has the added bonus of enhancing your business’ skill set and keeping you ahead of the competition.

A study by job board totaljobs found 2 out of 3 UK employees have left a job because of a lack of learning and development. It also found 9 out of 10 workers want more training courses to develop their skills. Meanwhile, global recruitment and HR firm Randstad’s own research has shown that 75% of respondents to a survey said they needed more training to keep up-to-date with their industry, with 71% of people wanting more vocational training.

It just shows that if you want to keep hold of your colleagues and employees, you need to invest in their training.

And if you need somewhere to store and manage your company’s training records, we have just the place. Our Training Module lets you track training requirements for your location, log training events and file training records.

Keeping people safe

How to retain top talent may be one of the biggest questions – and potentially problems – your organisation faces. And there are some potentially surprising answers. Have you considered health and safety as a solution?

Employees want to feel valued. And when they know you’re offering a safe and secure environment, that’s one big tick in the ‘Value’ column. After all, everyone wants to stay safe and well at work. When accidents happen, people start feeling disengaged from their employer.

And it’s a continuous cycle. A Gallup study found that more engagement in the workplace results in lower absenteeism and fewer safety incidents. So making sure your workforce is safe can help ensure its continued safety.
